Walkabout Mini Golf VR 2024 AMA Virtual Scoring Event

Results

In the 4th AMA event played on Walkabout Mini Golf VR, Jorge Rimblas takes first place yet again but this time not on his own. Ron Majersky shot a tournament best -21 on Quixote Valley’s hard course to match Jorge with an overall and impressive -41 under par. Mick Cullen wins 3rd place by one stroke over Matt Roalstad. Tom Loftus & Matt Roalstad tied Jorge for the low round score of -21 on Mars Garden easy, one of the newer Walkabout courses in 2024.

In addition to Ron, we had 4 first-time AMA Walkabout virtual event competitors in Bryan Akers, Highlighter, Lester Bowes, and Nikolai Friend.

Congrats to everyone on this final event of the 2024 season. The 2023 Spirit Award winner Max Cullen took the final putt of the season!

Event Details

The best virtual reality mini golf game, Walkabout Mini Golf, will once again provide virtual scoring opportunities for AMA points for 2024. This will be the 2nd virtual event on Walkabout for 2024 with the first having happened back in February.

The Discord channel that was the base for the previous AMA Walkabout virtual tournaments is not currently active so we’re working on a way to run a virtual tournament for AMA members where we would utilize the form linked below. Stay tuned and make sure you are a member of the AMA Events Facebook group. The format will be the same as past events where players will play two rounds in succession in the stroke play format. One on an easy course and one on a hard course.

The courses were selected live on the evening of November 4th live on Walkabout in the private room AMA. AMA organizers Tom, Pat & Mick were present and the following courses were selected at random!

Mars Garden Easy

Quixote Valley Hard

Mars Garden is one of the newer courses released in Summer 2024. We will be playing with conventional gravity mode and not low gravity mode so please practice the correct version. We’ve seen top scores of -26 and expect good rounds to be in the 20s. Quixote Valley has great scores in the low 20s but scores in the teens will be more than adequate on this tricky course.

For the competitive point-scoring event, we will have one AMA organizer or handpicked room host in a room either playing and/or observing the play to confirm people showed up on time and participated within the rules. Rules and expectations will be shared in advance in the AMA events group. We’ll collect screenshots of the results from each group and those will be the official scores.

These are currently the times we’ll have available

Sat. Nov 9 - 4pm CT | 22:00 UTC

Sat. Nov 9 - 6pm CT | 00:00 UTC (11/10)

Sat. Nov 9 - 8pm CT | 02:00 UTC (11/10)

Sat. Nov 9 - 10pm CT | 04:00 UTC (11/10)

Sun. Nov 10 - 8am CT | 14:00 UTC (11/10)

Sun. Nov 10 - 12pm CT | 20:00 UTC (11/10)

Sun. Nov 10 - 2pm CT | 22:00 UTC (11/10)

We’re going to ask players who signed up to select their time availability or multiple preferences over in the AMA Events Facebook group or by messaging one of the AMA organizers.

To play, you’ll need to let us know your AMA membership name and your handle (aka name) on Walkabout so we can attribute points via a form you can find at https://bit.ly/amavirtualevent2024. We will only attribute points to those who opt-in before the event to let us know their screen names. All players must be active AMA members before they play their rounds. Points are based on the 2024 scoring rubric and are not additive if you played the previous Walkabout event. You only get the points from your best result.

North Carolina Open (Southern Swing)

Results/Recap

After 5 rounds, Gary Hester and Randy Reeves were tied at 183 (+3) on the challenging Harris built course at Lakeview Putt & Play in Arden, North Carolina for the final event of the 2024 Southern Swing. The winner of the play off would not only decide the winner of the event but Gary and Randy were playing their 3rd events of the Southern Swing and the winner would win the tour championship, $500 and free entry into the mini golf Masters in Myrtle Beach in October.

The tiebreaker was a three hole aggregate playoff. They played holes #1 ,7 & 12. Both deuced #1 & #7 and Randy got a 2 on #12. On the last roll of the ball, Gary carded an ace to win the playoff. Video is coming soon on that one.

If Randy won the playoff, Gary and Randy would have tied for the Southern Swing tour championship but Randy would have won tiebreaker based on their head to head finish this weekend.

Congrats to Gary on the win and for Randy on yet another impressive showing in not only this event but on the tour.

Results/Recap

Mossy Creek local pro David Lanham armed with his own lime green urethane putter (yes, like the kind you find available to the public playing!) won the tournament by 7 strokes in a stacked field featuring legendary mini golfers from across the US. David was the only player to finish every round under par (36). From an outside perspective, it may have seemed like a major surprise to see a relatively unknown putter finish above some of the top names in the game, but David does hold the course record of 29 (-7). Greg Newport, a legendary putter from North Carolina, finished 2nd by a stroke over another USPMGA master’s winner Joey Graybeal. Joey played the final round of the tournament against David Lanham. Kent Cranford took 4th on his own and 2024 USPMGA US Open winner Adam Shanks tied for 5th with Tennessee based competitors Jack Taylor and Eli Janik.

In the amateur division, long-time Putt-Putt competitor (APA) Clayton Craft also won by 7 strokes in the 3-round competition with an overall +3 score (111). His scores would easily hold up in the pro division. Dale Gentry and Josiah Rosser finished tied for 2nd in the amateur division.

Vanette Block was the top women’s finisher by 1 stroke over Amanda Farahany.

60 competitors finished at least 3 rounds in hot conditions on this challenging Harris built course. 3 of the holes had multiple cup placements that were changed for the final two rounds for the pro competitors.

43rd Farmington Miniature Golf Tournament

  • Farmington Miniature Golf - Farmington, CT (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Results

It was a rain-soaked event this year for the 43rd Farmington Miniature Golf Tournament. What started as a chance of showers through the morning turned into a steady rain for all three rounds. By the time players were into the second round, there was plenty of soaked turf and puddle-filled cups to content with throughout the course, not to mention struggles of keeping scorecards dry. This tournament is one of the more unique ones on the AMA schedule where you have to use course balls, which play quite differently through water than what many might be used to from more golf-ball centric tournaments.

It didn't keep down the top scores though. Josh Kestenbaum, who made his way down from Massachusetts, will still go sub-120 on a course that doesn't give up scores below 40 easily, pushing him to the top of the leaderboard and a two stroke win over Landon Weiss from NJ. Mark "The Highlighter" Novicki kept the home state from being swept on the podium though as he won a 9 hole playoff against Griffin Weiss after tying at 122 for the three rounds.

Details

This is a one-day, 3 round tournament. Sign-in and warm-up starts at 7:00 a.m. and play begins promptly at 7:30 a.m. at Farmington Miniature Golf & Ice Cream Parlor.

Players can use their own putters but as per tradition, all putters must use a house ball for the competition. All balls are in play during rounds.

Entry fee: $35 prior to the day of the tournament (see registration form linked below) and $40 on the day of the tournament.

Top prize in recent years has been $100 and we expect it to be the same, paying down to 3rd place. The field is separated in half to give prizes in a lower division as well.

A portion of the registration fee and the bonus ball money will be donated to the Jimmy Fund/ UCONN Children Cancer Fund

Registration details will added to the Tournament website soon.

Matthew Kraus assured his position as the GOAT (greatest of all time) when it comes to the annual Red Putter Pro Tournament. Matthew already had the most tournament wins with 3 total coming into this year but in adding another title, he also becomes the first person to threepeat as champion. Second place came down to a three-way tie between 2023 Masters winner Gary Hester, 2024 MC Mini Masters winner Bryan Akers, and 2021 Red Putter Tournament winner Tim Tally. Tim “The Tallywacker” Tally won on the 2nd tie-breaker hole (#2) in dramatic fashion with an ace. On the 4th hole, Bryan Akers bested Gary Hester with a hole-in-one to take 3rd.

Words by Mick Cullen

A record-high field of 55 players--54 of whom finished the day--came together for the 27th edition of this six-round interstate extravaganza. Players from seven states converged on America’s Action Territory in Kenosha, WI, for the first putts of the day, starting on the Wisconsin Adventure course. Mini Masters rookie and Minigolf Team USA player Jeremy Inabinet began the event with a round of 36, tying 8-time champion Tom Schweiss for the lead after 18 holes. Just behind them were Tom Loftus at 37 and rookie Bryan Akers, 6-time winner Mick Cullen, and rookie Joe DiPrima at 38.

Mick Cullen, who founded the event back in 1997, then broke his son Xavier’s course record at Action Territory’s Wild West layout, carding a 38 to put him in the lead at -17. Derek Hartmann, who finished the 2023 Mini Masters just a shot back of first place, stood in second place after 36 holes at -15. Tied for third at -13 were Akers, Schweiss, and 3-time tournament winner Matthew Cullen.

The tournament then moved on to Congo River in Hoffman Estates, IL, for the middle two rounds. Round 3, on the Congo Falls course, was led by a pair of 38s shot by Ben Briselden and Justin Gutche, with a quartet of players tallying 39 (Hartmann, Loftus, Nate Blazier, and 2005 champ R.J. Dusak). Halfway through the day, Hartmann had taken the overall lead at -16, with Mick Cullen at -15, Akers at -13, and Schweiss at -12 still in close pursuit.

2021 MCMM titleist Jason Gola paced the field with a course record-tying 36 in the 4th round, played at the Congo Rapids course. Inabinet, rookie Tim Wittig, and Xavier Cullen shot 37s while Akers, Schweiss, Hartmann, and Gutche all tallied 38s, jamming the top of the leaderboard. After four rounds, Hartmann maintained his lead at -19, with Akers now in second at -16 and Schweiss and Mick Cullen knotted at -15 and Gola sitting at -14.

The caravan next made its way to its final location, Par-King Skill Golf in Lincolnshire, IL. None of the leaders seemed to have their best stroke at Par-King Black, as Tommy Schweiss won the course’s title for a second straight year with a 37. The only other players to break 40 were Gutche at 38 and rookie Tony Borgford with a 39. With 18 holes to play, Hartmann still held the lead at -16, but a gaggle of players were within striking distance. Akers stood at -15, Mick Cullen and Gutche at -14, Tom Schweiss at -13, Inabinet at -12, Loftus and Gola at -11, and Matthew Cullen at -10.

Despite the packed leaderboard, it became clear as the round progressed that it was a two-player race between Hartmann and Akers. Rookie Akers, founder of Putters League Atlanta, tied Hartmann on hole 1, and they remained matched at the top until Akers made his only ace of the final round on hole #6 to pull ahead by a shot. On the 8th, Hartmann once again made it a tie when he sank a 10-foot putt over a downslope on an impressive shot he hit left-handed with an inverted putter.

Hartmann’s first ace of the round, on the 11th, put him back in the lead for the first time since the round began, and he was up by a shot when his tee shot rolled back out of the 13th-hole castle and into the water hazard. After missing his shot from the alternate tee, he took a 4, and Akers’ 2 flipped the standings to put him up by a shot. Each player took a 3 on the 14th and a 2 on the 15th, but Hartmann’s second ace of the round came at a clutch moment to knot things up once more with two holes to play. After trading deuces on the 17th, Hartmann and Akers came to the pinball-style 18th tied for the lead with no one else in striking distance.

Hartmann took a 3 on the hole, leaving Akers with a chance to win outright with a 1 or 2. His tee shot overshot the top three holes and appeared destined for the 3 hole at the bottom before glancing off a peg and taking a hard turn into the final 2 hole, giving him the dramatic one-shot victory with a final total of -18. The triumph made Akers the first rookie ever to win the Mini Masters.

Tom Schweiss led all players with 10 total holes-in-one. Maxwell Cullen, age 10, took the Junior Division trophy by a resounding 50 strokes at +26, as well as the Most Improved trophy by cutting 42 strokes off his previous best total score. Julie Schweiss won the Veterans’ Award with a +4 score, Loftus was awarded the Spirit of the Game trophy, Tom Schweiss took the Champions’ Division with a 3rd-place overall finish at -16, and Inabinet was named Rookie of the Year with his -12 total. Other trophy winners included:

Most Sixes: Charlie Tourville (9)
Most improved at Wisconsin Adventure: Dianne Cullen (-4)
Most improved at Wild West: Maxwell Cullen (-10)
Most improved at Congo Falls: Nate Blazier (-8)
Most improved at Congo Rapids: Mike Smith (-11)
Most improved at Par-King Black: Aaron Kaminski (-4)
Most improved at Par-King Red: Chris Flesch (-6)

Note from tournament organizer Mick about schedule and rules 6/24/24

Playing in the 27th annual M.C. Mini Masters this weekend in Wisconsin/Illinois? It’s 108 holes over 6 different courses, and it is fairly unusual, but it has proven to be a popular format. Here are some things to be aware of if you’re one of this year’s 16(!) rookies.

1) No practice time on tournament courses. There is no chance to get acclimated to the holes or try anything out before it counts. Get your practice in in previous days if it’s a must for you. Given the format of this tourney and the fact that all these courses are open to the public, fitting in practice time on tourney day just isn’t an option.

2) Standard golf balls only—no Euro-style minigolf balls allowed. Either use house balls or your own commercially available golf balls.

3) If an entire group elects to do so, they may all take their first shot on each hole before anyone putts out to finish. If three people in a group want to do that and one doesn’t, the one player who wants to complete the hole can just play first and putt out before the others take their tee shots.

4) We will use a shotgun start on the first four courses, but that isn’t possible on the last two, so there will be some downtime. We will have free cold drinks available for you (3 per person available for the day) and there is a nice seating area available.

5) One hole on each course is designated as a Wacky Hole! Every putt on that hole must be made in an unusual way (e.g., backwards between your legs) or using an unusual implement (e.g., hockey sticks instead of putters). This is designated in advance for each Wacky Hole and is not optional. Everyone’s in the same boat, and this helps us to remember that it’s just mini golf, and it’s supposed to be fun (and funny)!

6) The 18th hole at each Par-King course is a roulette wheel that can result in you scoring anywhere from 0 to 7. That’s too capricious, so we instead use a homemade 18th hole for each course. You can still play Par-King’s 18th hole (and possibly win a free game with a 0), but the only score that counts for the 18th hole is the one you score on our homemade 18th, seen below (which will almost always be 1, 2, or 3, unless your tee shot goes awry).

7) After round 2, there will be a break for lunch. Everyone is on their own for lunch, but many people will no doubt find places to eat together. We will then meet at Congo River in Hoffman Estates, IL for round 3.

Tentative schedule:

7:30am—arrive at Action Territory in Kenosha, WI; check in and sign the birdhouse

7:45am—Mandatory rules meeting

8:00am—Action Territory opens, I pay, we play

Lunch break

1:00pm—start play at Congo River, Hoffman Estates, IL

Approx. 5:30pm—arrive and start play at Par-King, Lincolnshire, IL

Approx. 10:00pm, if all goes well— awards ceremony at Par-King

Many people go to dinner together afterwards

One of only four people in the world to shoot a perfect game of Putt-Putt has a new title to his name. Rick Baird is the 2024 Salty Seagull Pro Tournament champion. He bested his friend and previous Salty Seagull champion, Gary Hester, with a tournament-best round of 33 in the 3rd round. 3-time Red Putter Pro Tournament winner Matthew Kraus finished closely behind in 3rd place. This tournament was delayed by a day due to severe rain on Saturday, June 22nd, and by all accounts, the weather was beautiful on tournament day. Congrats to Rick on his first AMA tournament win!

Inaugural Rosebud Open

Results/Recap

Hole by hole stats and results

Fourteen players came out for the first annual Rosebud Open at America’s Action Territory in Kenosha, WI. The red AMA tournament consisted of three rounds on the family fun center’s Wisconsin Adventure course.

Tom Schweiss, winner of 8 M.C. Mini Masters tournaments, got out to the early lead with a first-round 37, highlighted by three aces in a five-hole span on the back 9. Other sub-40 rounds to start the tourney included a pair of 38s (Mick Cullen, Ben Briselden) and 39s (Kevin Anderson, Nate Blazier).

Round 2 featured a pair of 36s, the low rounds of the day, by Briselden and Greg Powroznik. Briselden’s three aces in round 2 brought his total to a field-leading 6 through 2 rounds, and he vaulted into the lead with a total score of 74. Mick Cullen was right on his heels with a 75, and Powroznik stood in 3rd place at 77. Tied for 4th at 79 were 2005 M.C. Mini Masters champion R.J. Dusak and Schweiss.

Starting the final round on the 13th hole, Briselden started with an OB shot on the 13th hole that led to his only 5 of the day, dropping him a stroke back of Cullen. However, he pulled even with an ace two holes later. With a dozen holes to go, Cullen pulled back into first as Briselden dropped strokes on two straight holes. The lead had stretched to 3 with 7 holes to go when Cullen effectively put it away with the only ace of the day on the course’s 7th hole, the toughest hole on the course, which played to an average of 3.1 on the day. That hole may have been the difference maker for the day, as Cullen took a total of 5 shots there in 3 rounds. While Justin Gutche achieved the low total of round 3 with a 37, Cullen cruised to a 5-shot victory and a 54-hole total of 113, with Dusak and Briselden tied for 2nd at 118.

While Cullen took the first prize of $100, Dusak and Briselden went into a three-hole aggregate playoff for the 2nd-place award of $75, putting on the tough 7th-8th-9th hole sequence. Dusak’s 3 on the 7th edged out Briselden’s 4, and they each took a 3 on the 8th and a 2 on the 9th, as Briselden’s tee shot on #9 slid just over the left edge of the cup, giving Dusak the 2nd-place prize. Briselden did take $20 for the highest total of aces (8).

Final Standings

All of the competitors for the 1st ever Lighthouse Classic

Hole by hole stats and results

In the first of its kind on Long Beach Island in New Jersey, The Lighthouse Classic attracted 17 pros and 8 amateurs to Jen’s Links at Lighthouse Cove in Barnegat Light, N.J. on May 4. With three rounds for pros and two for amateurs, competitors did their best to conquer the High Tide course and seven pros managed sub-40 averages.

Paired together for the first two rounds, Connecticut’s Matthew Liles and New Jersey host David Biggy started the tournament with matching aces on the first hole, and the two battled from there, with Liles snatching The Lighthouse Classic trophy by a stroke over Biggy. After Liles and Biggy carded scores of 37 and 39, respectively, during the first round, Liles dropped a 34 — breaking the previous course record of 35 — while Biggy managed a 36, as Liles brought a four-stroke lead into the final round.

During the third round, Biggy registered a trio of aces to score an even-par 36, but Liles’ 39 was enough to win with a three-round score of 110. Biggy finished second with a 111, while Connecticut’s Justin Seymour swiped third with a three-round set of 41-36-36 for a 113. New Jersey’s Ed Weiss (37-41-38) captured fourth following a nine-hole putoff against after he and Connecticut’s Mark “Highlighter” Novicki (38-38-40) each recorded three-round totals of 116. Georgia’s Bryan Akers (42-36-40) and Connecticut’s David Vayda (43-37-38) each totaled 118 to finish as the last two players to post averages under 40.

In all, eight pros from Connecticut, six from New Jersey, and one each from Georgia and New York comprised the professional field. Biggy scored the most aces with seven. Liles was right behind him with six, while Seymour carded five aces.

On the amateur side, mostly made up of New Jersey competitors, nearby resident Bradford Birch scored a two-set total of 82 following a 42 in the first round and a 40 in the second. Connecticut’s LouAnn Corbidge managed scores of 43 and 40 to end with an 83 for second place, while another local, Barbette Lovas, delivered scores of 44 and 41 for an 85 to grab third place.

Walkabout Mini Golf VR 2024 AMA Virtual Scoring Event 1

Results

The first week of Season 12 of the Mighty Coconut Walkabout Weekly Tournament paired two courses released in 2023, Journey to the Center of the Earth (Easy) and Atlantis (Hard). Both courses have lots of tricky holes where hole-in-ones are hard to come by and an errant tee shot can put you into bogey territory. Despite all of these challenges, we see a familiar face at the top of the leaderboard. Jorge Rimblas won his 3rd AMA Walkabout event in a row with a combined -35. Jorge tied Matt Roalstad for most hole-in-ones with 6 and tied Mick Cullen for the best score on the Atlantis (hard) course with a -14. Jorge took an uncharacteristic 5 on Atlantis #17 but closed with the challenging ace on #18 to secure the win. Jorge needed that ace because 2022 AMA season winner Mick Cullen was only 2 strokes behind with a -33. Shawn Brown narrowly lands in 3rd with an impressive -22 on the easy course. Matt Roalstad, Tom Loftus and Kyle Courcy all had strong rounds to narrowly put them in the top half of finishers who would receive a single point.

Congrats again to Jorge! He’s the AMA player to beat on Walkabout right now. 🏆🏆🏆

Expect another Walkabout virtual scoring event sometime in Oct/Nov 2024.

O-Street Mini Golf: Winter Classic

Results

O-Street Mini Golf’s 9th Annual Winter Classic took place at Manchester Family Golf Center in Manchester, NJ. Fifteen brave souls from around New Jersey traveled to what some say is the “Central” part of the state, for two rounds of stroke play to determine this year’s champion. The conditions were wet from the morning of rain, with temps in the low 40s. The course consisted of long, winding holes with a few hole in one opportunities. After the first round, the defending champion Griffin Weiss was tied with his brother Landon (last year’s O-Street Open Champion) with 41’s. Griffin’s second round was a bit rocky with two 4s, but then recovered with back to back holes in one and a strong finish of 40. Landon was staying close behind, but needed a hole in one on Hole 18 to tied his brother....and got it! Griffin and Landon went into a three hole playoff and were still tied after two holes. On the third hole (Hole 14), Griffin set himself up for an easy two and Landon unfortunately, couldn’t match it. Griffin Weiss won the Battle of the Brothers and defended his title.

Coziest Mini Golf Open

Recap/Scores

The 3rd Coziest Open saw the largest turnout in the event by double with the majority of new players coming from the amateur division. This was the first time that qualifying didn’t determine the field as well. 10 of the 34 competitors were 16 years old or younger giving A Couple of Putts their youngest field in the 8 tournaments they have hosted.

In the pro division, Tom Loftus won from start to finish with a 3-round total of 88. After finishing in the final position of the Coziest Open in 2023, Kameron Haselius set the course record with a final round of 27 and jumped up to 2nd place to get his first podium for an AMA event. Mick Cullen played solid all day and only fell to 3rd due to Kameron’s outstanding play. Bryan Akers from The Putter’s League Atlanta made his Coziest Open debut with a top 5 finish. In the aces-only round for pro players outside of the top 6, Anthony Dunkel won in a tie-breaker with Amanda Farahany of Putter’s League Atlanta and Marcel Neinhus. All of them shot 4 aces in their aces-only round.

Mark Giannini ran away with the amateur division top spot with a pro-level 2-round score of 65. Matt Tellander won a two-hole playoff against Kathleen Malone for 2nd place.

The Prodigium Minigolf Tournament

We started the new year and new season with an all ALL NEW mini golf tournament in Easthampton, Massachusetts at Prodigy Mini Golf. The course has evolved into its second iteration, designed by the mastermind and owner of Prodigy Jeff Bujak. The Prodigium Mid-Winter Cup (co-organized by O-Street Mini Golf) brought out 25 players from the Northeast, with a majority being AMA members like yourselves. Some players included Aaron Kaminski, Griffin Weiss, Kyle Courcy, and Justin Seymour (all top 10 players from last season). The format consisted of two rounds of 17 holes and ended up a three way tie in first place between newcomer David Bava, the reigning Matterhorn International Pro-Am champ Dave Vayda, and last year’s AMA season winner Aaron Kaminski. But it was Dave Vayda with a commanding three stroke lead in the playoff, who was victorious. David Bava took second place and Aaron ended up in third place.

2023 AMA Virtual Players Gathering & Meeting

Competitors from the Dolphin Open in Maine. September 2023

This past year saw the American Mini Golf Alliance (AMA) grow in leaps and bounds with 17 in-person putting events and 4 virtual events on Walkabout Mini Golf VR and the Putt18 mat. We want to put a bow on the season with a online gathering of players to wrap up the season, to take in feedback for 2024 and provide an opportunity for players to connect from around the country.

We’ll be gathering on Zoom and you can connect by going to bit.ly/ama2023playergathering. Our plan is to record the gathering and make a link available to those that are not able to attend.

In advance of the gathering, we have created a survey to collect feedback, thoughts and suggestions from players that you can find at https://bit.ly/ama2023survey We really value the input from people who are interested in helping making the AMA better and more fun.

Look forward to seeing you on Thursday, December 7th at 8pm central / 9pm eastern.
